100% natural wallpaper made from "Flax" plant.
That's " FLAX WALLPAPER ."
Kagamiya Honpo has been developing and releasing environmentally friendly items such as original wallpapers made from fleece materials.
As interest in the earth and environmental issues such as sustainability and SDGs increases, we have continued to explore whether it is possible to create wallpaper that has a lower environmental impact.
During this time, I came across flax, a material that has been proven to have the highest level of safety in the world.
This time, I would like to introduce you to Wallpaper that returns to the earth, which is made from this plant-derived material.

What is FLAX WALLPAPER?
``FLAX WALLPAPER'', which has recently been released by Kagamiya Honpo, is a wallpaper made from ``flax'', a plant that is attracting attention as a plant from which linseed oil can be extracted.
It has a texture similar to Japanese paper with flax fibers woven into it, and a simple off-white color.
We use water-based latex ink that does not contain harmful solvents for printing, and both the material and ink are environmentally friendly.
The "FLAX WALLPAPER" collection features original designs that capture the atmosphere of natural materials, such as botanical and vintage concrete.
Material characteristics
Wallpaper made from plants that can be recycled
The raw materials for FLAX WALLPAPER are 65% flax fiber and 35% viscose.
Flax is an annual plant that can grow with a small amount of water. While it takes more than 10 years for a typical tree to grow, it grows rapidly in a short period of one year.
In other words, it is a fiber material that can be produced without destroying existing forests.
Viscose is a fibrous material made by dissolving pulp in a liquid.
You may also see it on clothing tags, and it is the raw material for rayon and cellophane.
Both materials are derived from plants and are environmentally friendly as they return to nature after disposal.
Made from the world's highest standard of safe materials that do not contain harmful chemicals
The base material of FLAX WALLPAPER has the world's highest safety level and has received Oeko-Tex R Standard 100 certification, which certifies that textile-related "materials" and "products" do not contain harmful chemicals. I'm doing it.
More than 350 types of hazardous substances are covered. This is an international certification that meets the strict safety standards not only in Japan but all over the world.
Moisture control and insulation
Humidity control effect to keep the room comfortable
Flax fibers are highly absorbent, making FLAX WALLPAPER excellent at absorbing moisture from the air.
We actually conducted an experiment to see how much moisture FLAX WALLPAPER absorbs from the air. Prepare two 30cm square aquariums and paste his FLAX WALLPAPER on top of the vinyl chloride wallpaper on one and the vinyl chloride wallpaper on the other.
They put a cup of hot water into each tank, took it out after 10 minutes, and then observed how the evaporated water vapor changed.
As a result, the humidity inside the aquarium made with PVC wallpaper did not change much, whereas the aquarium made with FLAX WALLPAPER absorbed moisture and the humidity decreased.
Energy saving effect due to excellent insulation
FLAX WALLPAPER is environmentally friendly and has excellent insulation properties. The thermal conductivity of each wall material is summarized in the table below.
The lower the number, the more difficult it is for the material to conduct heat. The high thermal insulation effect of FLAX WALLPAPER can be seen from the fact that it has approximately half the thermal conductivity of cork, which is often used for trivets.
Wall material | Thermal conductivity λ (W/(m K)) |
---|---|

Material Notes
Due to the characteristics of flax material, please note the following points:
Easy to stretch
It stretches more easily than regular wallpaper, so be careful not to pull it too much when pasting it.
Water stains
If water or glue gets on the surface of the wallpaper, it may leave water stains.
Be careful not to get the front side wet.
Traces on the back
There may be burnt marks on the back of the wallpaper. This is due to the characteristics of the material, and there is no problem with the surface, so please use it as is.
Construction method
Now, let's take a look at the tools needed to install FLAX WALLPAPER and how to apply and remove it.
When installed over vinyl wallpaper, which is common in Japanese homes, it can be restored to its original condition. It can also be used in rental housing.
- In the case of functional wallpaper with a coated surface, it may not adhere well.
- After removal, some flax color may remain on the wall.
Please check the sample in advance.

How to apply FLAX WALLPAPER
- Prepare 1.5 times the amount of water specified. Make the glue a little thin so that it is easy to peel off.
- Measure out the required amount of glue and stir well until it thickens.
- Use a roller bucket to apply glue evenly to the wall across the width of the wallpaper you are applying.
- Apply glue a little wider than one width of wallpaper. Be sure to use a brush to apply glue, especially on the edges.
- Check the top and bottom of the pattern and the order in which they should be pasted, then paste the first sheet. Leave about 5cm extra at the top and bottom.
- Apply by gently removing air with your hands. Be careful not to pull too hard when reapplying as the wallpaper will stretch.
- Use a bamboo spatula to shape the hair.
- Use the ground spatula as a guide to cut off the excess. If you can't cut it in one go, cut in the same spot several times.
- Cut off the excess glue at the bottom and wipe off any excess glue around it with a sponge wrung out in water.
- Apply glue to the wall in the same way as the first piece.
- Attach the second piece, matching the pattern.
- Apply wallpaper in the same way.
- Once you have applied it to the edge of the wall, cut off the excess vertically.

How to remove FLAX WALLPAPER
- Soak the surface of the wallpaper in water and leave it for about 5 minutes.
- Once the glue has loosened, slowly peel it off.
- Wipe off any glue remaining on the wall with water.
- If there is strong peeling resistance, there is not enough moisture, so spray more water to loosen the adhesive before peeling it off.
- It can be removed cleanly by thoroughly moistening it with water, but repeated use is not recommended as water stains and expansion/contraction (deformation) may occur when removed.

summary
Approximately 600 million m2 of wallpaper is produced annually in Japan, and vinyl chloride wallpaper accounts for more than 90% of this.
PVC wallpaper is made of vinyl chloride on the front and pulp on the back. Wallpaper made from these materials is difficult to separate and cannot be easily recycled, so most of it is disposed of in landfills.
"FLAX WALLPAPER", a wallpaper made from flax, does not contain any vinyl and is made from 100% plant-based materials, so it is decomposed by bacteria and returned to the soil. .
This is a definite step towards solving the problems we face.
"Let's make some earth-friendly choices for our walls too."
Wallpaper that is kind to both the environment and people.
How about considering this as one of your options for the future?
